UK spouse visa and the financial requirement

Plain-language guide · United Kingdom · general information

What the spouse route is for

The partner (spouse) route lets the partner of a British citizen or someone settled in the UK apply to live there. It is usually granted for a period, then extended, and can lead to settlement after a qualifying time. Three things sit at its core: a genuine and subsisting relationship, the financial requirement, and English.

The financial requirement

The sponsor (and sometimes the applicant) must show a minimum level of income or savings. This can come from employment, self-employment, certain benefits, savings above a threshold, or a combination, each with its own evidence rules. The minimum figure is set by the Home Office and has changed, so check the current amount rather than assuming.

Which money counts, and how you prove it

The rules are strict about the form of evidence — payslips and bank statements covering set periods, employer letters, and specific documents for self-employment or savings. Money that clearly exists but is not evidenced in the required way may not count, which is why preparation matters as much as the amount.

Relationship and English

You also prove the relationship is genuine (living together where relevant, communication, shared commitments) and meet the English language requirement at the required level. Both are assessed alongside the finances, not instead of them.

Tip: two applications with the same income can succeed or fail purely on how the evidence is presented. Match your documents to the exact categories in the rules.

Common questions

How much income is needed for a UK spouse visa?
There is a set minimum that the Home Office updates. Confirm the current threshold on gov.uk, and check whether cash savings can meet or top up the requirement in your case.
Can savings replace income?
Savings above a threshold, held for a required period, can count towards or meet the requirement under specific rules. The calculation is technical, so check the current guidance.
Does my partner's job in the UK matter?
Yes — a UK-based sponsor's employment is a common way to meet the requirement, but the evidence must cover the required period in the required format.

The financial rules are detailed and change. Tell the assistant your sponsor's income and savings for a plain-language starting point.
