Canada's Start-Up Visa: how much funding do you actually need?

Short answer

It depends on which type of designated organisation backs your application, not on your personal net worth. The Start-Up Visa (SUV) has no minimum personal wealth requirement at all — the funding requirement attaches to the business, not to the founder.

Settlement funds — a separate, smaller requirement

Beyond the business funding, every applicant must also show personal settlement funds independent of the investment, to prove they can support themselves after arrival. For 2026 this is CAD 14,690 for a single applicant, rising with family size (CAD 27,297 for a family of three). These figures are indexed annually to Canada's low-income cut-off.

Why the cap matters more than the dollar figure in 2026

IRCC has set a hard annual cap of 830 permanent-residence applications under the SUV stream for 2026 — a 60% cut from 2024 levels. Meeting the funding threshold does not guarantee a spot; the qualifying business must also hold a valid commitment certificate from one of currently around 78 active designated organisations, and applications are processed against that yearly ceiling.

Business incubators are the only route with no dollar minimum, which makes them the most accessible on paper — but acceptance into an incubator's programme is itself competitive and scrutinised, so "no minimum" doesn't mean "no bar."

Common questions

Do I need a certain personal net worth to apply for the Start-Up Visa?
No — the SUV has no minimum personal net-worth requirement. The funding requirement is tied to the designated organisation backing your qualifying business, not to your personal wealth.
What's the cheapest way to meet the funding requirement?
A business incubator route has no fixed investment minimum, only a requirement to be accepted into the incubator's programme — but acceptance is competitive.
How much do I need to show for settlement funds separately from the business investment?
CAD 14,690 for a single applicant in 2026, rising with family size — this is separate from and in addition to whatever the designated organisation requires.
