Canada Express Entry & CRS basics
What Express Entry is
Express Entry is an online system that manages applications for several federal economic immigration programs, including the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program and the Canadian Experience Class. You first check whether you are eligible for at least one of these programs, then create a profile.
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)
Profiles are scored and ranked by the CRS, a points system based on factors like age, education, language ability (English and/or French), skilled work experience, and combinations of these. Extra points can come from things like a provincial nomination, French skills, Canadian study or a sibling in Canada, depending on current rules.
Profiles and invitation rounds
Being in the pool is not an application. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) holds regular draws and invites the highest-ranked candidates (sometimes targeting specific categories) to apply for permanent residence. If you receive an Invitation to Apply, you then submit the full application with documents proving your claims.
Boosting your score honestly
If your CRS is below recent cut-offs, common levers include improving a language test result, getting an Educational Credential Assessment, gaining more skilled experience, or pursuing a Provincial Nominee Program, which can add a large number of points. Only claim what you can prove at the application stage.
Common questions
- Is there a fixed CRS score to get invited?
- No fixed number — each draw has a cut-off that varies. Meeting eligibility and entering the pool does not guarantee an invitation; check recent draw results for context.
- Do I need a job offer for Express Entry?
- Not always. Many candidates are invited without a job offer, though a valid offer or provincial nomination can add points. Requirements depend on the program.
- How long is my profile valid?
- Express Entry profiles are valid for a set period and can be resubmitted. Confirm the current validity on the IRCC website.
CRS depends on your full profile. Tell the assistant your age, education, language and experience for a plain-language walkthrough.
