Who is eligible for the Australia Subclass 407 Training visa in 2026?

Plain-language guide · general information, not immigration advice

You are eligible for the Australia Subclass 407 Training visa only if you satisfy every item on a fixed checklist: you have an approved sponsor, you have (or are exempt from) an approved nomination, you are at least 18 when the application is decided, you hold a qualifying visa if you apply inside Australia, you have functional English, you meet the health, character and health insurance requirements, you genuinely intend to stay temporarily, you have repaid any debt to the Australian Government, and you have not had a visa cancelled or an application refused in a way that counts against you. This comes from the Australian Department of Home Affairs Training visa (Subclass 407) official page, as of the August 2026 official page. The list below is general information for people still working out whether this visa is even the right frame — it is not advice tailored to your situation, and where your own history or training plan is unusual, the current official pages and a professional opinion should decide it for you.

What does the Subclass 407 actually let you do?

It lets you come to Australia to do workplace-based training that improves your skills in your current occupation, your area of tertiary study, or your field of expertise, and it can also be used to complete a professional development training program. It is explicitly not a route to ongoing work in Australia.

It is a temporary visa. The official page states it may be granted for a stay of up to 2 years, you can leave and re-enter as many times as you like while it is valid, and time spent outside Australia does not extend it. You cannot extend this visa to stay longer; a further stay means applying for another visa.

Do you have an approved sponsor?

Yes — sponsorship is not optional. Your sponsor must already be approved as a temporary activities sponsor before your visa stage begins. The process runs sponsor first, then nomination, then your visa application; if your sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency, the agency must have approved sponsorship and you are invited rather than nominated.

Do you have an approved nomination, and which type fits?

Unless your sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency, your sponsor must nominate you for a program of occupational training and that nomination must be approved before you apply for the visa. Nomination requirements differ depending on the purpose or type of training, and there are three types.

Nomination type What it covers
Occupational training required for registration Training you need in order to be registered in your occupation
Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation Training to build skills in an occupation that is eligible for this type
Occupational training for capacity building overseas Overseas qualification, government support, or professional development

At nomination stage the sponsor gives the department your details as the intended trainee, the details of the training including its purpose or type, and how and where the training will happen.

How old do you need to be?

Usually you must be 18 or older at the time the department decides your application. The Migration Regulations 1994 framework for this subclass also contemplates an applicant under 18 where exceptional circumstances justify the grant, and the official page separately notes that the visa may not be granted if that would not be in the best interests of an applicant under 18 — but the published Home Affairs page frames the rule as "usually 18 years old or older", so that page is the reference to rely on.

What if you are already in Australia when you apply?

If you apply in Australia you must currently hold a valid temporary substantive visa, and it must not be a Subclass 403 (Temporary Work (International Relations)) visa in the Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream, a Subclass 771 (Transit) visa, or a Special Purpose visa.

If you are in Australia and do not hold a substantive visa: the last substantive visa held must not have been one of those three, and the application must be made within 28 days after that last substantive visa ceased to be in effect, or within 28 days after being notified of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal decision that set aside and substituted the decision to cancel the substantive visa, or of the Minister's decision not to revoke that cancellation.

What level of English do you need?

You must have functional English. That is a defined standard on the Home Affairs requirements pages rather than a general "good enough" test, so it is worth checking the official definition before you treat this requirement as met — particularly if you are relying on study history rather than a test.

Do you and your family meet the health, character and insurance requirements?

You and any family members applying with you must meet the health requirement, and you and family members aged 16 and over applying with you must meet the character requirement; the department may also ask other family members to meet it.

On health cover: you are personally liable for all your healthcare costs in Australia, and if the visa is granted you must maintain adequate health cover for the whole of your stay. Your insurance should cover medically necessary treatment, including transport.

Do you genuinely intend to stay temporarily?

You must only intend to stay temporarily in Australia and to do the things the visa allows. You must also have substantially complied with the conditions of the last substantive or subsequent bridging visa you held. If you are 18 or older, you must have read (or had explained to you) the Life in Australia booklet and sign an Australian Values Statement confirming you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.

What else can disqualify you even if everything else fits?

Two items sit outside the training plan itself:

Can family come, and what changes later?

You can include members of the family unit when you apply, and family members who apply with you must also meet the health and character requirements. If you apply from outside Australia, family members who are not coming to Australia may also have to meet the health requirement. If the visa is granted, family members may later be able to apply to join you as subsequent entrants through the Temporary Work and Activity Visa (Subsequent Entrant) (403, 407, 408) form in ImmiAccount; they should be listed on the nomination form where the sponsor is not a Commonwealth Government agency, and provide a letter from the primary applicant's sponsor confirming sponsorship.

Changes to the training matter too. Training with a different organisation in Australia requires that organisation to sponsor you and lodge a new nomination; once approved, you can train there for the time left on your visa. If you stay with the same sponsor but your training program changes, they must lodge a new nomination and you then need a new visa application. If your sponsor ends your training, you must tell the department.

What about cost and processing time?

The official page directs applicants to the Visa Pricing Estimator to work out the visa cost, with a charge for each family member who applies with you, and separate possible costs for health checks, police certificates and biometrics. A lower visa cost applies to eligible Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens who lodge a valid application, based on the passport used in the application, and family members are eligible for that lower cost too. For timing, the official page points to the visa processing time guide tool, which shows times for recently decided applications as a guide only and is not specific to any one application; applications can take longer if they are incomplete, if documents are missing, or if information has to be verified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the Subclass 407 to work in Australia long term?

No. The visa is for workplace-based training or a professional development program, and the official page states it is not for ongoing work in Australia. It is temporary, may be granted for up to 2 years, and cannot be extended.

Does my employer have to be approved before I apply?

Your sponsor must be approved as a temporary activities sponsor before the visa stage, and unless the sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency it must also have a nomination approved for you before you apply for the visa.

What are the three nomination types again?

They are occupational training required for registration, occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation, and occupational training for capacity building overseas, which includes overseas qualification, government support or professional development.

Is there an age limit for the Subclass 407?

The published rule is that you must usually be 18 or older at the time the application is decided. The official page does not set an upper age limit, and separately notes the visa may not be granted where that is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.

I'm in Australia on a bridging visa — can I still apply?

Only if your last substantive visa was not a Subclass 403 Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream visa, a Subclass 771 Transit visa, or a Special Purpose visa, and only if you apply within the 28-day window described on the official page.

Do I need health insurance for the whole stay?

Yes. You are personally liable for your healthcare costs, and you must maintain adequate health cover for the whole of your stay if the visa is granted, including cover for medically necessary treatment and transport.

What English score do I need?

The requirement is functional English as defined by the department. The official page links to its functional English requirements rather than naming test scores in the eligibility list, so the definition on that page is what applies.

Can my family join me later if they don't apply now?

Possibly, as subsequent entrants, using the Temporary Work and Activity Visa (Subsequent Entrant) (403, 407, 408) form in ImmiAccount, with the sponsor's agreement. Family members who apply with you at the start must meet the health and character requirements.
