What documents do I need for a Subclass 202 visa application in 2026?

Plain-language guide · general information, not immigration advice

For a Global Special Humanitarian visa (Subclass 202) application, the Australian Department of Home Affairs asks every applicant for a small core set: the pages of your current passport showing your photo, personal details and issue and expiry dates; a detailed statement in English about why you left your home country; and one scanned photograph. Certified copies of any visas or residence permits you hold sit just behind those. Everything else — military records, change-of-name evidence, partner and dependant documents — is added only where it applies to you. This follows the Department of Home Affairs "Global Special Humanitarian visa (Subclass 202)" page as of August 2026.

Which documents does every main applicant have to provide?

Four items form the base of the application.

The department also requires that the information you provide is accurate, and its own guidance covers what happens if you cannot prove your identity or do not provide true information.

What proves your identity if you have no passport?

A written statement explaining why you have no travel or identity documents is the substitute the department names. That is not a lesser option — it is the expected one, and presenting it up front is better than leaving a gap the department has to query later.

Where you do hold other identity documents, add them: a national identity card, if you have one, and proof of change of name. Change of name can be shown with a marriage or divorce certificate, change of name documents from an Australian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages or the relevant overseas authority, or documents that show other names you have been known by.

What documents support the humanitarian part of the claim?

Two things, one of them conditional.

The statement is the one that carries the substance of the visa: it must be in English and set out in detail why you left your home country. This is where the eligibility test — that you are subject to substantial discrimination in your home country amounting to a gross violation of your human rights — is evidenced in your own words.

The conditional item is registration proof: if you have registered with any international organisation dealing with refugees, such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), provide proof of that registration. If you have never registered, there is nothing to provide.

Which items only apply in certain situations?

This is where most applicants either over-collect or miss something.

Document Needed when
National identity card You have one
Proof of change of name Your name has changed, or you have been known by other names
Military service records or discharge papers You served in the armed forces of any country
Certified copies of marriage certificates or relationship registrations For you and anyone else included in the application — even if they are not joining you in Australia
Statement explaining no travel or identity documents You cannot provide the identity items above
Form 956A You want to nominate someone to receive your correspondence
Form 956 You want to nominate someone to provide immigration assistance

Suppose an applicant who never served in the armed forces and has never changed their name: their file is passport pages, the English statement, the photograph, certified copies of any permits held, and relationship documents for anyone included in the application. Nothing on the conditional list applies, and adding it would not strengthen anything.

What does a partner need, and how do you prove a de facto relationship?

A partner included in the application provides identity documents, character documents, documents about other relationships if applicable, any visas or residence permits held, and a photograph on the same basis as the main applicant. On top of that, you provide either your current marriage certificate, or documents proving a de facto relationship of at least 12 months before you apply.

Proof of a de facto relationship can include joint bank account statements, billing accounts in joint names, joint leases or mortgages, and documents showing your partner has lived at the same address as you.

What do dependants need, and how do under-18 and over-18 differ?

Document Dependant under 18 Dependant 18 or over
Identity documents Required, or a statement explaining why they have none Required
Proof of your relationship with them Required — e.g. a birth or marriage certificate Not listed
Marriage certificates or relationship registrations held Required Covered by "documents about other relationships, if applicable"
Character documents If applicable Required
Visas or residence permits held Required Required
Photograph Required Required

Note the direction of travel: younger dependants are tied to you through relationship evidence, while dependants aged 18 or over carry their own character and relationship documents, in the same way an adult applicant would.

How many photographs, and do documents need to be certified?

Online applications need one scanned photograph per applicant, of the whole face against a plain background. "Per applicant" means per person on the application, not one per family.

Certification is required for specific items rather than everything: certified copies of any visas or residence permits you hold, and certified copies of marriage certificates or relationship registrations for you and anyone else included in the application.

What happens if you cannot send everything with the application?

Documents you did not attach when you applied can be sent afterwards to the office where you sent the application, quoting the file number you have been given. The department may also ask you for more information.

Other post-lodgement steps are driven by the department, not by you: it will tell you if health examinations are needed, it might ask for biometrics (fingerprints and photo), and it might ask you to attend an interview about your situation, your family and information you provided. If a second instalment applies, an invoice is sent after you have met all other requirements for the visa — pay it once it arrives rather than requesting it. The department states that it cannot give updates on applications, so the practical rule is to wait to be contacted.

Does the 60-day proposal deadline change what you should prepare?

It changes the timing, not the list. Your proposer must use ImmiAccount to submit a proposal unless you are applying under the Community Support Program, and will then give you the transaction reference number (TRN). You must submit the application within 60 days of the proposal; if it expires, the proposer must submit a new proposal and you use the new TRN. Under the Community Support Program, proposers instead submit Form 842 and a proposal form specific to their Approved Proposing Organisation.

Having the core documents ready before the proposal is lodged is what makes that 60-day window comfortable. These lists describe what the department's page asks for; they are general information rather than advice on an individual case, so the official page — and a registered professional where your circumstances are complicated — should be what you rely on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for a Subclass 202 visa without a passport?

Yes, in the sense that the department provides for it: if you cannot provide travel or identity documents, you provide a statement explaining why you have none. The same option is listed for a dependant under 18 who has no travel or identity documents.

What counts as proof of a de facto relationship for a partner?

You need documents showing you have been in a de facto relationship for at least 12 months before you apply. Joint bank account statements, billing accounts in joint names, joint leases or mortgages, and documents showing your partner lived at the same address as you are all given as examples. A current marriage certificate is the alternative.

How many photographs does an online application need?

One scanned photograph per applicant, covering the whole face against a plain background. Every person on the application — main applicant, partner and each dependant — needs their own.

Do I need proof of registration with UNHCR?

Only if you have registered with an international organisation dealing with refugees, such as UNHCR; in that case, provide proof of the registration. The English statement about why you left your home country is required regardless.

Can I add documents after I have lodged the application?

Yes. Send documents you did not attach to the office where you sent the application, quoting the file number you were given. The department will also contact you if it needs health examinations, biometrics, an interview or further information.

What should I do if I made a mistake on my application?

Tell the department as soon as you can and complete Form 1023 Notification of incorrect answers. The same principle applies after lodgement more generally: changes to contact details, passport, marital or de facto status, or the birth of a child all need to be reported.
