Do My Family Members Get a Bridging Visa A Automatically If We Applied Together? (2026)

Plain-language guide · general information, not immigration advice

If you lodged one combined substantive visa application in Australia with your partner and children, the Bridging visa A (BVA) (Subclass 010) is normally applied for at the same time — but "normally" is not the same as "for every person on the form". As of the August 2026 version of the Australian Department of Home Affairs' Bridging visa A (BVA) (Subclass 010) page, nearly all bridging visas are applied for automatically as part of applying for a substantive visa, and the Department will tell you if that has happened. Each family member's bridging visa is then assessed on its own, so the practical answer is: expect coverage, then confirm it person by person in VEVO rather than assuming.

This is general information about how the pieces fit together, not an assessment of your family's situation — for anything that turns on your own visa history, rely on the Department's current official pages and on advice from a qualified professional.

What "applying together" actually covers

The Department's wording is deliberately cautious: if you and your family have applied together for a substantive visa in Australia, you might also have applied together for a BVA. The combined substantive application is what makes a joint bridging visa possible in the first place, and the Department says it will notify you when a bridging visa has been applied for or granted as part of that process.

Two limits sit behind that. First, everyone included must be in Australia both when the BVA application is submitted and when it is granted. Second, a BVA is a temporary visa that keeps a person lawful while the substantive application is decided — it is not a right attached to the family as a unit. That is why the official page's next instruction is not "assume it worked" but "check if family members already hold a BVA" in VEVO.

Why each family member can be decided separately

The Department states that it will assess each member of the family unit's application and decide which bridging visa they can be granted. Under the Migration Regulations 1994, Subclass 010 carries no separate secondary criteria for family members, so a partner or child does not simply inherit the main applicant's bridging visa; every person in the application has to satisfy the same primary criteria.

In practice, that means a family can come out of one combined application with non-identical results. One person's BVA may be granted with different conditions from another's, or a person whose circumstances differ may be found to belong to a different bridging visa class altogether. Where a BVA is applied for separately rather than as part of the substantive application, the rule is narrower still: you can include members of the family unit only if they are already included in your substantive visa application.

How to check every family member in VEVO

VEVO is where the Department directs applicants to look, both for whether someone already holds a BVA and for what that visa allows. Because each person holds their own visa record, the check has to be repeated for each passport rather than done once for the application.

For each family member, look for:

Cross-check that against each person's grant letter, which is what tells you the conditions that apply. The Department also treats the grant letter as the record of whether work is allowed, with VEVO as the place to confirm restrictions.

"Holding" a BVA is not the same as it being in effect

This is the step families most often get wrong. A BVA comes into effect when it is granted — but only if the person's substantive visa has already ceased since applying, or if the BVA is more beneficial than their current bridging visa. Otherwise it comes into effect when their current substantive visa ceases, or when another more beneficial bridging visa ceases.

So suppose one applicant's student visa runs to December while their partner's visa has already ended: the partner's BVA may be live while the first person's BVA sits dormant until their substantive visa expires. Until that switch happens, each person must keep complying with the conditions of the substantive visa they still hold; the BVA's conditions take over only once the substantive visa ceases. Conditions are not shared between family members, so one person's work rights say nothing about another's.

When someone needs their own BVA application

A separate BVA application may be necessary where:

How it is lodged follows the substantive application: through ImmiAccount if that was online, or by webform using Form 1005 if the substantive visa was applied for on paper or if review of a decision has been sought. The BVA itself is free to apply for, and everyone included must be in Australia at both lodgement and decision.

What ends each person's BVA

A BVA ends immediately if the holder leaves Australia while it is in effect, is granted the substantive visa they applied for, is granted another bridging visa such as a BVB for the same substantive application, or has the BVA — or the substantive visa they held when it was granted — cancelled.

Where the substantive application ends badly, timing depends on when the BVA was granted. For a BVA granted on or after 19 November 2016, it ceases 35 calendar days after a refusal decision or AAT decision, a determination that the application or AAT review application is invalid, or a withdrawal of the substantive application or AAT review. It ceases 28 calendar days after a judicial review body upholds the refusal, or after withdrawal of a related judicial review application. Grants made before 19 November 2016 follow a 28-day period across the equivalent events. VEVO shows the exact date once the outcome has been notified.

Living on the BVA while the family waits

Everyone included must comply with Australian laws, the conditions of the visa they currently hold, and the conditions of the BVA once it comes into effect. Work is permitted only to the extent the conditions allow; if a BVA does not allow work or restricts it, a further BVA with work rights can be applied for, which usually requires demonstrating financial hardship. If the conditions are not met, a new BVA may be granted carrying the same work prevention or restriction as before.

Travel is the sharpest trap for families. A BVA does not support return travel: if someone leaves Australia while it is in effect, the visa ceases on departure and cannot be used to come back. Anyone who needs to travel and return while the substantive application is being processed must hold a Bridging visa B (BVB) before leaving. A BVA also cannot be used to wait out a citizenship application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do my partner and children automatically get a BVA if we lodged one combined application?

A combined substantive visa application made in Australia usually carries the BVA application with it, and the Department says nearly all bridging visas are applied for automatically this way. Coverage is still decided per person, so confirm each family member individually in VEVO.

Can I add a family member to my BVA if they were not in my substantive visa application?

No. Where a BVA is applied for separately, members of the family unit can be included only if they are already included in your substantive visa application.

Why does VEVO show a BVA for me but not for my partner?

The Department assesses each member of the family unit and decides which bridging visa each can be granted, so outcomes can differ within one application. Your partner may also hold a BVA that is not yet in effect, or a different bridging visa class.

Does everyone in the family get the same work rights on a BVA?

Not necessarily. Conditions are set per person and are recorded in each grant letter and in VEVO; the main applicant's conditions do not extend to the rest of the family.

Can my family travel overseas and return on a BVA?

No. A BVA does not support return travel, and an in-effect BVA ceases when the holder leaves Australia. A BVB must be granted before departure for anyone who needs to come back while the substantive application is being processed.

How long does each person's BVA last after a refusal?

For a BVA granted on or after 19 November 2016, it ceases 35 calendar days after the refusal, an invalidity determination, or a withdrawal. VEVO shows the exact date once the outcome has been notified.

Is there a fee to include family members in a BVA?

The BVA is listed as free on the Department's official page. Everyone included must be in Australia when the application is submitted and when it is granted.
