Can I extend my Australian Student visa (500) in 2026 or must I reapply?
No. There is no extension mechanism for the Student visa (subclass 500). According to the Australian Department of Home Affairs Student visa (Subclass 500) page, "You cannot stay in Australia longer by extending this visa. To continue studying in Australia, you must apply for a new Student visa." The same instruction appears in the "Stay longer" section of that page: continuing your studies means a fresh application, not a prolongation of the one you hold.
Why there is no renewal button on this visa
The Student visa (500) is a temporary visa granted for a defined period tied to your course, and nothing about that period stretches on its own. Three mechanics on the official page make this concrete:
- The visa is digitally linked to your passport; there is no label to amend and no add-on period to request.
- Time spent outside Australia does not extend the visa. You may travel in and out as often as you like while it is valid, but the expiry date stays fixed.
- If you are granted another substantive visa, your Student visa ceases. A later grant replaces it rather than adding to it.
So "extending" is not a smaller version of applying again. It does not exist, and planning around it is how people end up unlawful.
What applying again actually involves
A new Student visa (500) application is a complete assessment from scratch, made online through ImmiAccount. You may be in or outside Australia when you apply and when the decision is made, but the evidence is re-tested: a current Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), any required English language evidence, financial capacity evidence where the checklist asks for it, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the proposed duration of stay, and the health and character requirements that apply to you and any family members included.
Nothing rolls over automatically from the expiring visa. A common failure point is the CoE: it must be valid at lodgement and at the time the Department decides your application. A CoE stops being valid once it is cancelled or the course is complete, and a new CoE must then be attached in ImmiAccount. For example, assume an applicant whose bachelor CoE runs to November and who enrols in a master's starting in February: the new application must carry the CoE for the further course, not the one that is about to finish.
Can I lodge while I am still in Australia?
Yes — provided you hold an eligible substantive visa at the time of application. The official page also allows you to apply in Australia within 28 days of holding a Student visa, a Special Purpose visa, or a dependent Diplomatic (temporary) visa, or within 28 days of being notified by the Tribunal that your visa cancellation has been set aside. Late applications outside those windows are not accepted.
You cannot apply for a Student visa in Australia if you hold one of these:
| Visa you hold | Can you apply for a Student visa in Australia? |
|---|---|
| Domestic Worker (Temporary) Diplomatic and Consular (426) | No |
| Temporary Work (International Relations) (403), Domestic Worker stream | No |
| Temporary Graduate (485) | No |
| Visitor (600), Electronic Travel Authority (601), eVisitor (651), Medical Treatment (602), Transit (771) | No |
| Maritime Crew (988) | No |
| Diplomatic (Temporary) (995) — primary visa holder | No (family members can) |
One practical trap: if you are in Australia and your passport expires, renew it before applying, because you and any family members in the application must hold a valid passport to lodge.
How do I stay lawful between the two visas?
If you were in Australia when you applied, you are granted a Bridging visa A (BVA). It activates when your current substantive visa expires and lets you remain lawfully while the new application is processed. Two conditions matter enormously:
- The BVA has no right of return. It ceases if you leave Australia. If you have substantial reasons to travel, a Bridging visa B (BVB) is what permits return while processing continues. Check any proposed travel against VEVO first.
- Do not cancel your current visa yourself. Doing so makes you unlawful and removes eligibility for the BVA.
Applications lodged in Australia also come with explicit timing advice: allow plenty of time and avoid waiting until the last day of your current visa in case of unexpected complications.
What will the new application turn on?
English language. The accepted tests and scores depend on when you sat the test. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the published minimum overall thresholds are:
| Test | Minimum score | With ≥10 weeks ELICOS / Foundation / eligible Pathway | With ≥20 weeks ELICOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.0 | 5.5 | 5.0 |
| IELTS General Training | 6.0 | 5.5 | 5.0 |
| TOEFL iBT | 67 | 51 | 37 |
| PTE Academic | 47 | 39 | 31 |
| CELPIP General | 7 | 6 | 5 |
| LANGUAGECERT Academic | 61 | 54 | 46 |
| MET | 53 | 49 | 44 |
| OET | 1210 | 1090 | 1020 |
| C1 Advanced | 161 | Excluded | Excluded |
Two details associated with that table: C1 Advanced does not accept any scores below IELTS 6 equivalence, and from 21 January 2026 anyone sitting TOEFL iBT must select "Taking TOEFL for Australia" at registration for the result to be valid for Australian visa purposes.
Money. At minimum you must show enough to cover travel, 12 months of course fees (pro rata if shorter), and 12 months of living costs for you and accompanying family. Published 12-month living cost figures are AUD29,710 for the student, AUD10,394 for a partner and AUD4,449 per child; schooling costs of at least AUD13,502 per year per school-age child; travel of AUD1,000 if applying in Australia or AUD2,000 from elsewhere (higher amounts apply for parts of Africa). Instead of funds, you may evidence parental or partner annual income of at least AUD87,856 in the prior 12 months, or AUD102,500 if family members are included. These are the minimum amounts set for visa purposes, not a prediction of what living in your city will actually cost you, and this article is general information rather than an assessment of your individual case — the official page and a qualified professional's view are what should govern your final figures.
Health cover. OSHC must cover everyone in the application for the proposed duration of the visa, and the application will be refused if proof of it is not included. If you will study with more than one provider and both arrange OSHC, the second policy must begin as the first expires.
Documents generally. Use the Document Checklist Tool against your passport country and education provider, and re-check it just before you submit; it is routinely updated twice a year, on 31 March and 30 September. A maximum of 60 documents can be attached.
Can I include family members in the new application?
Yes — your partner, or your or your partner's unmarried dependent child under 18. You must declare them even if they do not intend to travel with you, because a family member left undeclared is not eligible for a Student visa to join you later; you would need to apply again and explain the omission. Note also that a child cannot be granted a Student visa as your dependent if they have turned 18 by the time the visa is finalised, and subsequent-entrant siblings without a parent must each lodge a separate application and pay the base application charge.
How long will the replacement visa last?
The Student visa (500) allows study of up to 6 years, and the grant period depends on the type and length of your course; primary school children starting their enrolment in years 1–4 are generally granted a maximum of 3 years. This matters for sequencing: if you are close to the six-year ceiling, the new application is where that limit will be tested, not at the point of an "extension".
What if my visa expires before I graduate?
Two published routes may fit. If your Student visa expires before graduation, you may be eligible for a Visitor visa (subclass 600), which requires a letter from your education provider stating your graduation date. Separately, if you hold or held a Student visa and completed specific qualifications in Australia in the last six months, you may be eligible for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). Otherwise, staying longer for any other reason means applying for a visa that suits those circumstances.
When should I lodge, and what will it cost?
Lodge well in advance. The Department advises allowing plenty of time, notes that processing takes longer at peak periods, and warns that incorrect forms, missing documents or verification checks all slow things down; a fee waiver request lodged in Australia does not trigger an automatic bridging visa, since the exemption must be checked first. The global visa processing time tool gives times for recently decided applications but is a guide only, not a promise about yours.
On cost, the official page does not print a single fixed amount: the base charge applies per main applicant, there is a further charge for each family member who applies, and there may be additional costs for health checks, police certificates and biometrics. The Visa Pricing Estimator is the tool to price your own case. A lower visa application cost applies to eligible Pacific Island, Timor-Leste and ASEAN citizens, recognised automatically through the passport used in ImmiAccount, and to valid applications in the Independent ELICOS and Non-Awards Sector. Applicants who held a Student visa on or after 1 February 2020 and were affected by COVID-19 in specific ways may seek a fee waiver with a completed Form 1545 from their education provider; the waiver covers the visa application charge only. One point worth remembering before you lodge: the application charge is not refunded if the application is refused.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any form or checkbox to extend a Student visa (500)?
No. The Department of Home Affairs states plainly that you cannot stay longer by extending this visa. The only way to continue studying is to lodge a new Student visa (subclass 500) application online, which is assessed from scratch against current requirements.
Do I keep my work rights while waiting for the new decision?
Your current Student visa conditions, including the 48 hours per fortnight limit while your course is in session, continue to apply until that visa expires. Once it expires, what you can do depends on the bridging visa or new visa you then hold, so the specific conditions should be checked in VEVO or your grant letter rather than assumed.
Will the time I spent outside Australia add to my visa period?
No. The official page says you may travel outside Australia and return as many times as you like while the visa is valid, but time spent outside Australia does not extend the visa. Only a new grant creates a new expiry date.
Do I need a new Confirmation of Enrolment for the second application?
Yes. You need a CoE for each course you intend to study, registered on CRICOS, and it must remain valid both when you lodge and when the application is decided. If your old CoE is cancelled or the course is complete, a new one must be attached in ImmiAccount to stay eligible.
What happens if I leave Australia while the new application is pending?
You do not have to notify the Department of travel, because a decision can be made while you are outside Australia. However, a Bridging visa A ceases on departure with no right of return, so anyone who needs to travel and come back must look at a Bridging visa B or check that another visa permits return.
Can my family join later instead of being included now?
Only if they were declared in your Student visa application, or became your family member after the visa was granted. Undeclared family members are not eligible to join you later on a Student visa; you would need to apply again including them and explain why they were left out.
Are the English or financial figures guaranteed to stay the same through 2026?
No. The English thresholds differ by test date, the TOEFL registration requirement changed on 21 January 2026, and the Document Checklist Tool is updated on 31 March and 30 September each year. Treat the amounts and scores here as the published figures at the time of writing and confirm them against the official page before you rely on them.
